I was taken with the Sighs track Feel that came out last summer. It reminded me of a mix of 1980’s indie and dream pop. Just over a year later they carry on in the same vein on the Fiends EP but things go a bit skewriff towards the end…
The opener Lost sounds anything but as it heads for the indiepop dance-floors with it’s driving synths, infectious vocals and trumpets whilst Surface Tension will become a fave thanks once more to the trumpets and driving melodies. Trouble is they start to falter on the remaining two tracks. The ideas clearly start to wane on Turn and it sounds like a rehash of the first two tracks. Hurricanes is slower burner but ultimately ends up being unsatisfying and sadly brings nothing new to the table.
To my ears the Fiends EP is a classic case of less is more. The first two tracks would have made a fantastic killer 7″ and I will certainly buy it for those tracks alone. As for the other two it is indeed a case of being Lost…..
The Fiends EP is available on limited edition cassette via Sighs Matters (groan….). You can get it from bandcamp.
